The impact of diagenesis on the reservoir quality of the early Cretaceous Lower Goru sandstones in the Lower Indus Basin, Pakistan

Abstract The sandstone units of the Early Cretaceous Lower Goru Formation are significant reservoir for gas, oil, and condensates in Indus Basin Pakistan. Even though these sandstones rocks hydrocarbon exploration, diagenetic controls on properties poorly documented. For effective production, appraisal a promising reservoir, diagenesis must be comprehensively analyzed first. this study, core samples from depths more than 3100 m KD-01 well within central division basin have been studied. These were using petrographic, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopic analyses to unravel impacts sandstone. Medium coarse-grained well-sorted identified during petrographic study. categorized as arkose lithic arkose. Principal events which resulted changing primary characters compaction, cementation, dissolution, mineral replacement. observed processes can grouped into early, burial, late diagenesis. Chlorite is dominant constituent that occurs rims, coatings, replacing grains. early phase coating authigenic chlorite has preserved porosity. recrystallization chamosite massively reduced original pore space because its bridging structure. current study reveals altered rock characteristics preliminary outcomes great potential improve understanding process their impact adjoining areas.
